The WIP manuscript has a name
The Villainy of Nick Sutter: The Veilstone - Book One is the title of my current WIP. It is a full-length YA superhero novel and the first of a trilogy. This story is set outside of the Eric Icarus Mythos and has a darker tone. I am several chapters into the manuscript and am excited to share the progress with you. Synopsis
In the shadowy underbelly of a sprawling metropolis, young Nick, the timid son of a low-level mob accountant, becomes captivated by the enigmatic allure of Death Mask, the city’s most feared crime lord. His fascination deepens when he uncovers the Veilstone, an ancient artifact rumored to absorb evil energy and even souls. Entranced by its power, Nick is drawn into Death Mask’s inner circle, adopting the moniker “Sleeper” as he steps into the role of the supervillain’s protégé.
Opposing Death Mask’s malevolent ambitions is the valiant Old Guard, aided by his tech-savvy sidekick, Lurker: a debutante named Bethany who leads a double life, balancing high society by day and vigilantism by night. Unbeknownst to them, Nick and Bethany cross paths in their civilian identities, forming a deep bond and eventually falling in love, each unaware of the other’s secret life.
As the Veilstone continues to amass dark energies, Nick feels its sinister influence growing within him. His internal struggle intensifies when the Old Guard is incapacitated, leaving Lurker vulnerable to Death Mask’s schemes. Torn between his burgeoning love for Bethany and his loyalty to his mentor, Nick faces a harrowing choice: succumb to the Veilstone’s corruption or harness its power to protect his younger brother, Sebastian, the artifact’s intended target.
Nick must decide whether to let the darkness consume him or to defy his fate, risking everything to save those he loves and perhaps, redeem his own soul.
