I’m Putting Together A Team
Sinister Supers - Part Four
I’m putting together a team… multiple teams, in fact. The first assemblage of popular characters is indeed a super squad—but this powerful quartet isn’t exactly on the side of the angels. Welcome to the inaugural announcement of the first fearsome foursome that will enter the tournament of fantasy fictional smackdowns.
Onward with the roll call!
Sinister Supers, assemble!
4. Omni-Man
First appearance (as Omniman) Supreme #53, September 1997; (as Omni-Man): Invincible #1, January 2003
Popular entertainment of 2003:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - film starring Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen
The O.C. - television series starring Ben McKenzie and Adam Brody
The Da Vinci Code - novel by Dan Brown
Nowl-Ahn hails from the planet Viltrum, home of an advanced species of powerful humanoids who are hellbent on intergalactic domination. Created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, this “Super” character is introduced as a champion of justice as well as a fatherly figure. As his story unfolds, it is revealed that his alien heritage compels him to conquer humans.
Adopting the name Nolan Grayson, the alien establishes a life for himself while operating on Earth. He starts a family with his human wife, leading to the birth of their son, Mark—-a half-Viltrumite who develops incredible powers of his own and takes the superhero name Invincible.
Omni-Man leads the superhero team known as the Guardians of the Globe, but he eventually betrays them in an ambush. After the onslaught, Omni-Man brutally attacks Mark, forcing him to confront his true legacy. Voiced by J.K. Simmons in the Prime Video animated streaming series of the same name (2021), Omni-Man has reached new audiences who are now discovering his interstellar rampage.
Omni-Man’s allegiance to the Viltrumite Empire is put to the test when he starts a new family on another world. While spending time with this new alien society, Nolan has broken vows as well as his own people’s customs. Despite the rift between Nolan and Mark, Nolan attempts to reestablish a relationship. This is difficult for Invincible to accept because he knows all too well what his father is capable of.
Gifted with flight, speed, strength, invulnerability, enhanced endurance and stamina, as well as an accelerated healing factor, Omni-Man is an ultra-powerful being who is not afraid to unleash his full wrath should the situation call for it.
In a pivot from the normal Jonfiction Blog weekly format, the remaining three members of this team will be released on following days of this week, leaving Friday as a recap blog.
If this caped quartet can work together, then they would be an unstoppable force—-but who says the challenges they’ll face in this fictional tournament will be a contest of strength? In this bracket-style tourney, each team will be placed in unexpected situations where they’ll have to use their wits, as well as hope that they are really lucky.
The eight-team bracket will determine who is the most gifted (and potentially ruthless) squad of them all. The Sinister Supers are entering the arena at their individual peaks, but the scenarios have not been announced yet. Their opponents in this fantasy face-off? The team of Deuces Wild: Sequel Soldiers - heroes of second installments of movie franchises that were better than the original.
