Supercut is a wisecracking teen hero who isn’t exactly in “super” shape, but his loyalty and cunning wit make Melvin Medina a cut above the rest. He is one of the members of the second incarnation of a team of heroes—a troop of vigilantes who kickstarted a dynasty of heroics long ago.
In “Unsecret Identity: Eric Icarus - Book One,” New St. Cloud City is home to a group of costumed protectors known as the Super Society. These defenders of justice are heralded as celebrities who have been serving the citizens for years. The original lineup debuted over a decade prior to the events of “Unsecret Identity,” and in their time, they established a legacy of avenging justice. The first Super Society members consisted of adult heroes with various gear and gadgetry, but the team leader, Judge Justice, would later introduce a teen sidekick to the crew, Sidebar. The young crime fighter would eventually inherit the role of commander and become the grown up superhero known as Truther. As the new leader, Truther honored his era as a sidekick by assembling a squad of teen heroes to accept the roles of the city’s champions of virtue.
With the original members long gone, Truther forged the next set of heroes to continue their dedication to ridding the world of evil. Truther assumed command as well as the vast array of assets his former teammates left behind. With an ever-evolving arsenal of technology, Truther aimed to usher in the new era of heroes by training youngsters, just as he took to action as Sidebar. One of the initial recruits for the new Super Society was an unlikely choice with an even unlikelier choice of weapon.
The Super Society requires lots of assistance and resources with its daily operations. Billionaire tech mogul Baron Maddox manages the team and provides them with their base of operations: a swanky loft atop Pantheon Tower, a huge skyscraper in the heart of the city. With their sleek, futuristic-looking helicopter, the Pegasus, the Super Society will land on the roof of the building, making a public show of their commitment to patrolling for criminal activity. In addition to having access to the massive fortune Maddox brings, Truther et al enjoy a unique clearance making it legal for them to act outside of any government law enforcement agency. Maddox’s influence along with the Super Society’s history of saving the city contribute to their special treatment. Part of the agreement between the Super Society and Maddox is a program that fosters orphaned children.
Groups of foster care youths have lived in Pantheon Tower through the years, but the latest wave were selected by Truther when he thought the time was right to embark on reforming the Super Society. One such orphaned youngster was the nerdy and sometimes surly Melvin Medina. He attends the same high school as his super teammates, but just because they are classmates and live in the same luxury tower (and are even legally considered siblings), Melvin has his own group of friends. Melvin and his non-super companions enjoy fantasy gaming and often engage in a feckless war with their school - jocks (who themselves aren’t winning any championships anytime soon). Despite this, when the call comes, Melvin is ready to join his squad in action to defeat a villainous threat.
Given the alter ego name of Supercut, Melvin is equipped with specialized gloves with cybernetic attachments encasing his digits. With the press of a button, a razor sharp blade extends from his steel-encased index fingers. These “finger-blades” can tear through even the thickest materials. Melvin’s hi-tech gauntlets artificially enhance his forearm and hand strength to withstand the pressure of all that slicing a dicing.
Supercut’s costume is made of specialized fibers designed to protect him from cuts and other attacks. Though his uniform is custom made to guard his rotund form, his sleeves are exploded, revealing his unusually hairy arms. His babyface would suggest he is not a little hairball, but Melvin proudly displays his arm hair and has a pointer finger blade ready for anyone who has anyone with a snide remark, which usually come from his snarky teammate Extra.
Supercut adds an unexpected form of offense, but the mega-criminals of the city know not to underestimate this young hero.
